Just Add Water New Reef

New reef for far south coast fishers and a major milestone reached for Newcastle and Wollongong reef plans

Great news for far south coast fishers with the completion of the Merimbula Bay artificial reef in September. The reef consists of two enormous steel pinnacles installed approximately 100 meters apart, in 30 metres of water. These mammoth structures weigh in at over 90 tonnes each, which ensures their stability in even the largest coastal storms. Rising 12 metres (36 feet) from the sea floor they are sure to be magnets for kingfish and other transient pelagic fish throughout the Summer months. Stay tune for updates as the reef develops.

While further to the north, Tenders for the design and construction of two new pinnacle style reefs to be located in the Newcastle and Wollongong regions have now been released by DPI. The tenders are open until mid November with installation of these two highly anticipated fishing assets scheduled to be completed in 2019. Reef locations can be found by downloading the DPI FishSmart app in the maps section (iTunes app store: https://apple.co/2QUYS09 or on Google Play: http://bit.ly/2Dr8gGc) or head to the DPI website.
